52% of palm oil imports in 2018 fell on Krasnodar region
In physical weight, the import of palm oil and its fractions to Russia amounted to 946 thousand tons, in monetary terms - $677.6 million. Despite the growth of import volume, imports decreased by 3.5% in monetary terms. This is due to the decline in prices for palm oil in 2018. For example, the price of Malaysian palm oil in December 2018 was $535.02 per ton, 21.22% below than in December 2017.
Indonesia is the largest supplier of palm oil to Russia, its share in Russian imports in 2018 amounted to 83.68% (791.7 thousand tons for $541.9 million). 8.8% of palm oil comes to Russia from Malaysia. The third place in the structure of Russian imports is occupied by the Netherlands - 4.6%.
Out of Russian regions the largest volume of the imports of palm oil accounts for Krasnodar region, 494.2 thousand tons (52.2% of the total import volume). This is understandable, as there is a large commercial sea port Novorossiysk in Krasnodar region. However, the following regions in terms of palm oil purchases - Saratov, Tula and Nizhny Novgorod regions – raise more questions. It should be noted that Tula region takes the 2nd place in Russia on production of cottage cheese products, Nizhny Novgorod and Saratov regions take the 10th place and the 11th place respectively.
However, in the regions there are large enterprises from other industries-consumers of palm oil. In Saratov region there is a company "Solnechnye produkty" (fat-and-oil industry), Saratov confectionery association "Confession". In Tula region there is a large enterprise of confectionery industry - Yasnaya Polyana (a part of the holding "United confectioners") and pharmaceutical company - LLC Efremov-Pharma (a part of the chemical and pharmaceutical enterprise Medkhimprom). In Nizhny Novgorod region there is also a factory of "United confectioners" - JSC "Sormovskaya confectionery" and a number of other confectionery factories, Nizhny Novgorod pharmaceutical plant.
The volume of imports of palm oil is really growing, the decline in prices contributes to this, although the ruble does not play into the hands of importers, but the most important role is played by demand.
