Customs Union increases cheese and butter import duties starting from April 1st
The Customs Union countries starting from April 1 to June 30 raised duties for import of butter, curd, several types of cheese and some other dairy products from 15% to 18.3%. This measure will not have an impact on consumers, but will allow supporting domestic producers during the period of “great milk”.
According to the Minister for Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission Andrey Slepnev, the measure was introduced due to growth of dairy products import and rising of fodder prices for the cattle breeding sector.
Duty for imported curd and young cheese of over 40% fatness rose to 18.3% but not less than 0.4 euro/kg. Butter will be taxed at a rate of 18.3%, but not less than 0.29 euro/kg against the former 15%.
Following 45 days results the Customs Union countries will hold monitoring in order to check whether these measures made a negative impact on the dairy market as regards inflation and price growth. If not - the duty can be prolonged, Slepnev noted.
