The number of cattle in the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2019 reached 7.4 million animals, 4% higher than in 2018; compared to 2003, the growth was 52.7% (Committee on statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan).

The number of cows in 2018 amounted to 3.6 million animals, compared to 2017, the growth was 6.3%, compared to 1996, the number increased by 40%.

There are 883 thousand dairy farms in Kazakhstan. The average size of a dairy farm is 4 cows per farm (IFCN).

Milk production in the Republic of Kazakhstan

In 2019, the Republic of Kazakhstan produced 5.8 million tons of milk, 2.4% more than in 2018 and 34.8% more than in 2003 (Committee on statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan).

Milk consumption in the Republic of Kazakhstan 

The average level of milk consumption per capita according to IFCN data for 2017 was 264 kg, 9% lower than in 2016.



Production of dairy products in the Republic of Kazakhstan (according to the statistics Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan)

The volume of production of liquid processed milk and cream in Kazakhstan amounted to 481.9 thousand tons in 2017, 3.6% lower than in 2016.

Production of fermented dairy products in 2017 amounted to 192.9 thousand tons, 0.7% higher than in 2016.



The volume of production of milk powder was only 4.9 thousand tons (+2.9%), the volume of production of condensed milk and cream was 9.2 thousand tons (+0.3%).

Production of cheese and cottage cheese in 2017 increased to 25.2 thousand tons, 2% higher than in 2016 and 15% higher than in 2014.



Production of butter in 2017 amounted to 16.8 thousand tons, 1.5% higher than in 2016.


Foreign trade in dairy products in the Republic of Kazakhstan (according to the statistics Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan)

The volume of imports of non-condensed milk and cream to Kazakhstan in 2019 amounted to 21.5 thousand tons or 17.2 million dollars in monetary terms; compared to 2018 in physical terms, imports increased by 1.3% and 0.4% in monetary terms. Compared to 2015, the volume of imports in physical terms fell by 53.5%, in monetary terms by - 48.2%.

Imports of condensed milk and cream in 2019 amounted to 37.6 thousand tons or 73.5 million dollars; compared to 2018, imports decreased in tonnage by 14.7% in monetary terms by -8%.


In 2019, 36 thousand tons of fermented dairy products were purchased for 42.9 million dollars, 12.9% more in tonnage and 14.7% more in monetary terms than in 2018.


Kazakhstan also imported 11.3 thousand tons of condensed and non-condensed milk whey in 2019 for 12 million dollars, 18% more in tonnage and 44% more in monetary terms than in 2018.


In 2019, almost 5 thousand tons of butter were purchased for 20.5 million dollars, 22.3% less in tonnage and 25% less in monetary terms than in 2018.


Imports of cheese and cottage cheese in 2019 amounted to 25.6 thousand tons worth 86.3 million dollars, 16.3% higher than in 2018, in tonnage and 13% more in monetary terms.


The total volume of imports of these products in 2019 amounted to 137 thousand tons for 252 million dollars, 1.15% higher than in 2018 in physical volume and 2.3% higher in monetary terms.

Exports of non-condensed milk and cream from Kazakhstan in 2019 amounted to 39.4 thousand tons or 17 million dollars in monetary terms, compared with 2018 in physical terms, the volume of imports increased by 43.8% (and 5 times higher than in 2015) and by 40.7% in monetary terms (4 times higher than in 2015).

The volume of exports of condensed milk and cream in 2019 amounted to 910 tons or 1.8 million dollars; compared to 2018 imports increased in tonnage by 24%, in monetary terms by 68%.

Exports of fermented dairy products from Kazakhstan in 2019 amounted to 11 thousand tons, 15% higher than in 2018, for 10 million dollars, 18.8% higher than in 2018.


Deliveries of condensed and non-condensed whey to the markets of third countries in 2019 amounted to 748.7 tons (+74.6% by 2018) for 402 thousand dollars (3 times higher than in 2018). The peak of whey exports from Kazakhstan over the past five years was in 2016, when the volume of exports reached 1.3 thousand tons for 741.6 thousand dollars.

2.8 thousand tons of butter worth 13.7 million dollars was exported in 2019; compared to 2018, the growth was 57% in tonnage and 54.5% in monetary terms.


Exports of cheese and cottage cheese in 2019 amounted to 3.4 thousand tons for 10.8 million dollars, an increase compared to 2018 was 44.6% in physical terms and 20.8% in monetary terms.


The total volume of exports of these dairy products from the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2019 was 58.5 thousand tons for 53.5 million dollars, 38.3% higher than in 2018 in tonnage and 35.9% higher in monetary terms.
