On March 23, 2020 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 27.96 rubles (about 0.32 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 0.98% higher than last week and by 8,25% higher than in March 2019. The key factor in the growth of the index remains the weakening of the ruble, which led to an increase in the price of imports, and prices for raw milk in Russian regions began to grow, according to the Index DIA application .

According to the application Index DIA the weighted average price of milk in Russia last week increased by 0.3% to 25.76 rubles (about 0.30 euros)/kg, which is 5.2% higher than the price in March in 2019. Prices for raw milk increased in Stavropol, Krasnodar and Belgorod regions. The decline in prices for raw milk was observed in Vologda and Samara regions.

It is worth reminding that to get access to information about the prices for raw milk in all regions of Russia, users need to be registered on the page of the application Index DIA and enter current data on the price of raw milk on a weekly basis: http://www.dairynews.ru/company/country/russia/index/

The import price index increased by 2.33% to 33.83 rubles (about 0.39 euros)/kg; compared to March 2019 the growth of the index was 14.4%. The key growth factor was the weakening of the ruble exchange rate. At the same time, prices for some exchange-traded dairy products increased. At the auction of BUCE, the price of skimmed milk powder increased by 3.8% to 182 rubles (about 2.10 euros)/kg. At the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade prices for all key exchange-traded dairy products decreased, only the price of whey powder slightly increased. Prices for butter and cheese continue to decrease in the EU, and short-term panic growth in retail purchases does not compensate for the fall in export volumes and the catering segment. Moreover, in the European market, under the current conditions of quarantine, there is a shift in demand from mozzarella, which is the most popular in the catering segment, to cheeses such as Gouda, which is popular in retail. In general, the market in the EU and other regions is uncertain. The price of butter, taking into account the weakening of the ruble increased by 1.2% to 283.6 rubles (about 3.27 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar increased by 2.8% to 292.34 rubles (about 3.37 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder decreased by 1.9% to 191.9 rubles (about 2.21 euros)/ kg. The price of whey powder increased by 5.1% to 58 rubles (about 0.67 euros)/kg.

The 256th auction of GDT (Global Dairy Trade) on March 17, 2020 ended in a decline, prices for milk powder continued to decrease. The price index for dairy products fell by 3.9%. At the same time, in terms of the Russian currency, prices rose due to the falling ruble.

The import price of a pair of skim milk powder + butter increased by 1.98% to 36.56 rubles (about 0.42 euros)/ kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey increased by 2.6% to 32.21 rubles (about 0.37 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder increased by 4.9% to 24.15 rubles (about 0.28 euros)/kg.

The new value of Dairy Index DIA will be published on March 30, 2020.

Dairy Index DIA

Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
