Dairy market of Pskov region: decrease in livestock and monopoly of KABOSH
The volume of cheese production (excluding processed cheeses) in Pskov region in 2019 decreased by 0.25% to 10,256.8 tons. Production of cheese products increased by 0.6% to 1,509.7 tons. The production of cottage cheese increased by 27.5% to 2,156. 9 tons, the production of cottage cheese products increased by 1.6% to 89.5 tons.
Production of whole milk products decreased by 46.6% to 18,537. 2 tons.
Production of skimmed milk powder in 2019 has almost tripled to 5,429. 9 tons.
Production of butter increased by 44.8% to 3,300. 9 tons.
The volume of raw milk processing in Pskov region increased by 2.4% to 170 thousand tons (third place in the Northwestern Federal district after Leningrad and Vologda regions and 37th place in Russia). The deficit of processing capacity was only 3.1 thousand tons.
The surplus of milk in terms of final consumption was 36 thousand tons, the second place in the Northwestern Federal district after Vologda region and the 22nd place in Russia.
The largest milk processor in Pskov region is the cheese company Alantal (40.8% of the regional volume of milk processing), the share of GC Kabosh is 38.4%, JSC Pskov city dairy plant - 9.3%, and CJSC Pushkinogorsky Creamery - 8.5%.
In terms of milk consumption, the region ranks fifth in the Northwestern Federal district and 16th in Russia. In 2019, the indicator fell by 2.6% to 218.3 kg per capita. Raw milk production per capita increased by 1.1% to 275.7 kg (2nd place in the Northwestern Federal district and 11th place in Russia).
In general, the production of raw milk in 2019 increased by 0.8% to 173.1 thousand tons. Agricultural enterprises increased milk production by 0.8% to 158 thousand tons. In peasant farm holdings, milk production increased by 0.7% to 14.4 thousand tons.
41.5% of raw milk production in the region is accounted for the farms of Kabosh holding (71.9 thousand tons), the other major milk producer in the region is Terra Nova holding (7.8% - 13.6 thousand tons) and some of its dairy farms are located in Pskov region.
The average size of a peasant farm holding in 2019 was 63 cows per farm; the average size of an agricultural enterprise is 381 cows.
The number of cows in 2019 decreased by 5.2% to 28.2 thousand head. In agricultural enterprises, the number of cows decreased by 4.4% to 25.2 thousand head. Peasant farm holdings reduced their livestock by 11.3% to 3,016 tons.
In terms of the number of cows per km2, Pskov region ranks fourth in the Northwestern Federal district and 52nd in Russia, 0.5 cows per km2. The number of people per cow in the region is 22 (53rd in Russia and 7th in the Northwestern Federal district).
