EEC may carry out an investigation to increase imported cheese products custom tariffs
Cheese products importers declare their supplies using non-dairy commodity headings.
Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) plans to carry out cheese products import investigation upon the application of the National Dairy Producers Union (SOUZMOLOKO). According to EEC data, import of cheese products during the period from January to June 2014 increased by 45% - to 24.8 thousand tons compared to the same period of 2013 (17.1 thousand tons). Thus import of natural dairy products – cheese, milk and cream – decreased by 15-20%. Cheese price grew by 5.5% during the last month, milk price – by 0.4%. From the beginning of the year milk price grew by 13.9%.
Import of cheese products, which are sold in Russia as natural cheese, creates unfair competition for natural cheese producers and makes them work on the edge of profitability. In the context of general crisis in dairy sector this situation may lead to enterprises bankruptcy. Decline of cheese and butter industry may lead to dairy market crisis further exacerbation, believes Artyom Belov, SOUZMOLOKO Executive Director.
Earlier SOUZMOLOKO addressed EEC with a request to investigate the import market of butter, milk powder, cheese and cheese products, whey powder.
