About 70% of monopoly formations was withdrawn from the market of dairy products of the Russian Federation over the past 10 years, said the head of the Federal Antimonopoly service of Russia Igor Artemyev in an interview to the program "Pozdnyakov" on NTV channel, according to The DairyNews.
“We managed to destroy about 70% of these mafia structures over the past 10 years. We used the economic measures for that, not law enforcement,” – said the head of FAS.
However, in Russian regions a network continues to “flourish” under which organized groups of entrepreneurs buy up all milk products from manufacturers and resell it on the market, inflating prices, said Igor Artemyev.
“In the dairy industry there have always been problems with purchase price. There are organized structures which I would call the mafia (because mafia is an organized crime group). They are buy up milk or grain directly from farmers at bargain prices, threatening them, for example, that the grain from the farmers themselves won’t be received at the Elevator, and then resell at exorbitant prices,” the official added, stressing that to prevent such unfair competition, the Antimonopoly service should work together with law enforcement agencies, whose task is to protect farmers in this situation.
