In Japan, due to the coronavirus, the consumption of drinking milk decreased, but the consumption of yogurt increased

According to the Japanese Dairy Association, which was cited by Deputy Minister of agriculture of Japan Wataru Mihara in a conversation with The DairyNews, raw milk production in 2020 in Japan will be 7.47 million tons, which is 1.8% more than in 2019 (7.34 million tons).

This is due to the fact that the number of cows on farms is growing in response to the good price of milk.

Wataru Mihara reminded that the price of milk for farmers in Japan is determined only once a year. The price of milk was about 8,000 ~8,500 yen between 1995 and 2008. But in 2016, it reached 10,100, and in 2018-10, 310 yen per 100 kg. (65-69 rubles/liter).

"COVID-19 affects mainly the consumption of food. For example, the consumption of drinking milk has decreased due to the fact that schools have been quarantined, but instead the consumption of yogurt has increased slightly, because this product is known to have a good effect on health", said Wataru Mihara.
