In the United States the decrease of exports of dairy products is expected in the coming months
In general, exports of dairy products in dry matter amounted to 14.6% of the volume of milk production in the United States in February 2020. In January-February 2020, exports amounted to 14.8% of milk production.
In February 2020, the US delivered 170,556 tons of milk powder, cheese, whey powder, lactose and milk fat, 3% more compared to the level of February 2019. The volume of exports in monetary terms amounted to 528 million dollars, an increase of 9%.
Exports of whey increased by 17%, and the volume of deliveries in February 2020 amounted to 39,786 tons (the highest figure for the last eight months). The volume of deliveries of whey protein isolate amounted to 5,200 tons, an increase of 51%. The volume of exports of whey powder increased by 22%, and the volume of exports of whey protein concentrate increased by 26%.
Exports of whey from the United States to China in January-February 2020 increased by 24% compared to the corresponding period in 2019. Exports of whey to Southeast Asia as a whole increased by 16%.
Exports of cheese totaled 30,913 tons, the highest in the past nine months, but 8% below the corresponding level in 2019. Cheese shipments to Mexico totaled 9,610 tons, 19% more compared to 2019. At the same time, the supply of milk powder to Mexico decreased due to the weakening of the Mexican economy. The supplies of skimmed milk powder decreased by 28% to 19,909 tons, while exports of whey decreased by 30% to 3,984 tons. Total supply volume of milk powder, cheese, milk fat and whey to Mexico decreased by 18%, the lowest since September 2017. Exports of drinking milk and cream decreased by 30%, the lowest level for four years.
Generally, exports of skimmed milk powder from the United States amounted to 54,464 tons, 5% lower, even the growth in supply to Southeast Asia (+10%) and the Middle East and North Africa (+414%) could not compensate for the decline in sales to Mexico.
Exports of lactose amounted to 31,327 tons, 12% more compared to February 2019, mostly due to an increase in supply to Southeast Asia (+21%).
Exports of milk protein concentrate amounted to 3,885 tons, 30% higher than in 2019, and supplies to North Africa increased (three times higher than in 2019, 1,620 tons).
Supplies of milk fat from the United States in January-February 2020 amounted to only 3,569 tons, the lowest figure since 2007.
