Labeling will jeopardize the work of many enterprises throughout the EEU - Mikhail Maltsev
According to industry representatives, the continuation of the project in the context of the global economic crisis will negatively affect honest market participants and will hinder the free movement of goods between countries.
"Now it is more important than ever to maintain well-established interaction within the Eurasian Economic Union. Therefore, we believe that the introduction of mandatory labeling will not only require unjustified costs, but will also jeopardize the work of many enterprises throughout the EEU", emphasizes Mikhail Maltsev, Executive Director of the Fat and Oil Union of Russia.
The appeal notes that the introduction of labeling throughout the EEU may cause significant damage to the functioning of the single economic space. The introduction of unilateral labeling in any of the EEU states will automatically complicate the access of goods from other countries or lead to additional costs for fulfilling the project requirements. Only in Russia, the total cost of business to introduce labeling will amount to 1.5 trillion rubles, and 39 thousand small businesses may show a negative economic result.
The heads of industry associations who signed the appeal suggest changing the approach to the project within the framework of the EEU and introducing labeling only when all participating states make a joint decision on the results of public discussion. In their opinion, it is necessary to exclude the unilateral format of the introduction of this measure, since this may harm the entire ecosystem of relations between States within the Union.
The associations also suggest using labeling as a tool to combat counterfeiting only in those categories where a significant share of illegal traffic has been proven and the procedure for assessing economic feasibility has been carried out.
The press service of the CATD stated that the agreement on the labeling of goods in the Eurasian Economic Union has been ratified by all countries of the Union.
"The requirements for labeling and data exchange are clearly defined in the agreement, they do not create barriers for any of the countries, but allow companies from different countries to access new markets and integrate more closely into the economic space of the EEU. All states have expressed interest in fighting illegal products and providing competitive advantages to legal players. The CATD, for its part, conducts planned work with labeling operators in the EEU countries", believes the labeling operator.
