Maria Koval: a ban for cheese - like products is the right decision

The ban for products containing vegetable fats from 50 to 100% is the right decision in spite of its vulnerability and the impossibility of fast implementation. This opinion was expressed by farmer and cheesemaker Maria Koval in comments to The DairyNews.
The expert commented on the publication of the initiative of the Ministry of agriculture to ban the sale and production of cheese-like products and limit the use of milk powder in the production of dairy products.

"Cheese should definitely be made from natural milk, otherwise it is a completely different product and it should be called differently. It is worth noting that cheese is one of the most milk consuming products and with the growth of its production throughout the country, the need for natural milk will increase significantly. This will allow quite actively continue to develop our resource base and it is right so, we should be independent from milk powder and vegetable fat. Using vegetable fats, we develop agriculture in other countries. It is necessary to develop the economy of our country, so I think this is a very correct and useful decision", - said the founder of "Private cheese factory of Maria Koval".

As for milk powder, according to the expert, a complete ban on its use will create quite serious problems on the market, as the dependence of manufacturers on this product is very high, not only of cheese producers, but also of all producers of dairy products in general. Many decisions need to be implemented as carefully and gradually as possible, Maria Koval believes.

"The embargo imposed in 2014 showed that there are still a lot of sanctions cheeses in the country. Globally, this problem has not been solved; completely banned imports have not been eliminated. And in the case of the ban of milk powder there will be formed some sort of shadow format of solving problems. We need to move in a given direction, but to move very carefully", summed up Ms. Koval.
