For quite a long time the state's investment in the dairy industry was not very effective. The Director of the Russian Dairy Research Center (RDRC) Mikhail Mishchenko said in the live program “Otrazhenie” on OTR, reports The DairyNews.
According to the expert, the error of investments, which the state did earlier, is that the funds were used in large-scale production.
"And today we got amazing situation when in some regions (and, incidentally, there are a lot of such regions) one farm takes up to 30% of the market of raw milk. It is in principle a disaster. Because, imagine if suddenly this farm is ineffective, not only the employees who work there, so to speak, will be out of work. Local milk processing plants will be without milk at all," said Mikhail Mishchenko.
"Frankly speaking, the trend for growth was observed after 2014. Everyone says "thanks to the sanctions". Actually we have to say thanks to the ruble because the ruble fell very seriously, and it became possible to produce milk cheaper than on global markets. Regardless whether there was import or not, cheese and any Russian products became cheaper than imported," said Mikhail Mishchenko, talking with a presenter of the rubric "Agrarian policy" Igor Abakumov.
According to estimates of the RDRC, Russia imports about 5.5 million tons of milk (according to data of 2016). This figure has been decreasing over the last 3-4 years.
"Reduction of import is happening for two reasons - first, it is the growth of production of marketable raw milk. Second, the reduction in consumption that affects the decline in imports more than the growth of production", - stated Mikhail Mishchenko.
We will remind that according to Rosstat, milk production in Russia in the first quarter of the year rose by 1.5%.
