More than 20 million tons of various cheeses are produced annually in the world
By 2029, according to the OECD, world production will increase to 26.8 million tons, or by 14% compared to 2017-2019. About 82% of this volume will come from developed countries and only 18% from developing countries.
Cheeses are the largest segment of the global dairy trade. Global cheese imports in 2019 totaled more than 7 million tons worth $ 32 billion, according to data from the ITC Trade Map.
The largest importers are the EU, UK, USA, Japan and Russia. A large amount of cheese is imported by developed countries, which accounted for 54% of all world imports in 2017-2019. By 2029, this share will decrease slightly.
Among the leading exporters of cheese are the EU countries, New Zealand and the United States. According to the OECD forecast, they will account for about 65% of global cheese exports by 2029. The EU will remain the main world exporter with a share of about 44%.
