Olesya Smirnova: how to reform the breeding business in Russia
"Today, breeders do not want to keep bulls even for the breed – there are strict requirements for vaccination and special conditions of housing. Many are not ready to take these risks, and on the other hand, breeding stations for artificial insemination are not ready to accept these bulls at the age of 10 months when the bulls are evaluated. This period from 1 to 10 months is not commercially interesting for anyone in our country", said Olesya Smirnova.
According to the expert, it is necessary to reform the system of breeding livestock in Russia as follows:
It is necessary to evaluate cattle earlier than at the age of ten months;
It is necessary to develop both heifer sites and elevers;
It is necessary to create and develop the ethics of the correct business approach to the pedigree cattle trade.
"Trading in breeding, high-value, with a good margin is what our Association does. We have already made the first step towards this, and those companies that are keeping up with us today will get this margin first", explained Olesya Smirnova.
