PepsiCo may close Pervouralskiy dairy plant

Wimm-Bill-Dann, a part of PepsiCo, may close the production site in Pervouralsk, Sverdlovsk region, however, the milk market of the region will not be affected. By estimations of participants of the market, the share of the plant does not exceed 3% of the amount of milk processed in Sverdlovsk region, reports The DairyNews.
The closure of the plant of Wimm-Bill-Dann in Sverdlovsk region was announced to The DairyNews through several sources on the market. In PepsiCo it was said that they are not ready to comment on market rumours.

According to the estimation of one of the leaders of dairy farming in the region, the share of "WBD" does not exceed 3-5%, however, other plants of large international companies such as Danone (editor’s note – Ekaterinburg city dairy plant No. 1) and Parmalat (editor’s note - Berezovsky dairy plant) do not occupy a serious share of the market. Industry participants in the region say that the plant in Pervouralsk can be characterized as exemplary and the reason for the closure of the site is optimization of capacities, typical for TNCs.

In 2015 the market of milk processing in Sverdlovsk region was as follows: 25% is the share of sales of JSC "Irbitsky dairy plant", 20% - LLC "Molochnaya Blagodat", 17%- GC "Molochny kit", 38% - other plants.

Sverdlovsk region is a deficit region in terms of self-sufficiency in milk for final consumption. According to the Map of shortage of milk-2016 Sverdlovsk region took the third place in the rating of the most deficient regions, following Moscow region with Moscow and Leningrad region with St. Petersburg. The shortage of raw milk in the region in 2016 amounted to 385.7 thousand tons. However, it should be noted that the deficit is reduced from year to year; in 2016 the deficit was reduced by 83.8 thousand tons in comparison with 2013.



Milk production is growing in the region, in 2016 agricultural enterprises and farm holdings produced 550 thousand tons, 2.8% more than in 2015 and 13.6% more than in 2013.



At the same time the volume of milk processing is growing, in 2016 the enterprises of the region processed 531.5 thousand tons of raw milk that is by 3.2% more than in 2015. Since 2015 Sverdlovsk region is among the surplus regions in terms of availability of raw milk for industrial consumption, while the indicators of surplus are not so high – only 18.5 thousand tons according to 2016, actually this indicator is the volume of milk processing by one plant of medium size.


The production of dairy products in the region in 2016 in terms of milk amounted to 633.4 thousand tons, by 3.2% more than in 2015 and by 18.6% more than in 2013. Sverdlovsk region has shown the fastest growth in the production of cheese and cheese products in terms of milk in the country. Growth in 2016 compared to 2013 amounted to 1835.34%, the production volume in 2016 reached 76 thousand tons. Sverdlovsk region has become an example of a region that actually was able to start the production of cheese and cheese products under embargo conditions, increasing production volume from very low amounts to the actual performance.



According to the data for 2016 there were 53 milk processing plants in the region. The largest plants are: Irbitsky dairy plant (109 thousand tons of raw milk per year), OJSC MolochnayaBlagodat (62 thousand tons), LLC Verkhnyaya Pyshma dairy plant (35 thousand tons), OJSC Polevskoy dairy plant (30.8 thousand tons), LLC Alapayevskiy dairy plant (20,2 thousand tons).
