Production of cottage cheese is declining in Russia
In 2020, production of cottage cheese and cottage cheese products amounted to 739 thousand tons, 0.4% lower than in 2019. In 2013-2015, production of this product category showed growth, but then a noticeable decline began. Now, the category is not actually growing and it is unlikely to grow.
Production of cottage cheese and cottage cheese products in leading regions is decreasing. Moscow region (including Moscow), the largest region for production of cottage cheese and cottage cheese products, reduced production volumes by 10.7% compared to 2013. In Krasnodar region, the production of cottage cheese and cottage cheese products has decreased by 26.5% over the past seven years. In other regions of the top five, production of cottage cheese and cottage cheese products has increased, especially in Vologda region, but in Tula and Voronezh regions, the growth rate of production has slowed down in recent years.
At the same time, production of cheeses and cheese products continues to show good growth rates. According to DIA, the volume of production of cheeses and cheese products in Russia in 2020 amounted to 763 thousand tons (excluding processed cheeses), 10.3% more than in 2019 and twice as much as in 2013:
According to Director of Dairy Intelligence Agency, Mikhail Mishchenko, the demand from the category of cottage cheese will move to the category of soft cheeses, this segment shows growth and is likely to grow in the future.
