Russia lifts the ban on milk imports from South Korea introduced in 2010
"Imports of milk and dairy products subjected to heat treatment that guarantees the destruction of the foot-and-mouth disease virus from the Republic of Korea to the Russian Federation are allowed, provided that such enterprises are included in the register of third — country enterprises", the document says.
"In the context of harmonization of veterinary requirements for the import of products into the territory of Russia with the recommendations of the World organization for animal health, the Rosselkhoznadzor lifted restrictions on imports of dairy products from Korea, heat treated, guaranteeing the destruction of the FMD virus", — said in the press service of the Ministry to RIA Novosti.
In February 2010, the Rosselkhoznadzor imposed temporary restrictions on imports of a number of products from South Korea to Russia due to outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the country. Restrictions applied to the imports of animals susceptible to FMD, as well as all types of animal products, including finished products obtained from the slaughter of such animals.
In April 2020, the Rosselkhoznadzor reported that in agreement with the authorized agencies of the EEU countries, the South Korean company Namyang Dairy Products, which is engaged in the production of milk-containing products, was included in the register of third-country enterprises. According to information on the website of the Russian Ministry, this is the only company in South Korea that is allowed to import milk and dairy products.
According to customs statistics, before the ban, South Korea was not a significant supplier of milk or dairy products to Russia. For example, the import of non-condensed milk and cream in Russia in 2009 amounted to 13.8 thousand tons, and the main volume of deliveries (7.1 thousand) fell on Finland. A separate line of milk imports from South Korea was not recorded, and imports from "other" countries were only 26 tons.
