Russia will provide 90% of its needs for dairy products by 2024
"We tried to estimate the volume of growth in commercial milk production, based on the current announced projects of investors, based on the planned indicators. By 2024, we expect an increase of about 2.8 million tons of raw milk production. <...> As a result, we will reach 90% self-sufficiency in the threshold value of the food safety doctrine [for dairy products] by 2024", Voronin said. At the end of 2019, Russia produced 22.5 million tons of raw milk, the level of self-sufficiency in dairy products was 83%.
According to him, there are already initiated and planned investment projects for processing about 0.9 million tons of raw milk. "[The remaining] volume of 1.9 million tons can be processed by about 15 plants - this means either the construction of new ones, or the modernization and development of existing capacities", the expert said.
He added that the cost of implementing these projects is estimated at 35-37 billion rubles. "Because of the long payback period <...> the industry is unlikely to want to bear such costs without state support, so we give a significant role to the state here", said Voronin.
