Imports of a number of American, Australian and European products to Russia were banned in 2014 in response to anti-Russian sanctions.

In particular, jamon, cheese, and wine turned out to be under the embargo. Russian producers are trying to fill the vacant niche: in Moscow region and Lipetsk region, they produce analogues of French cheese, in Novosibirsk — jamon. The Rate&Goods recommendation service found out how Russian consumers reacted to these changes.

The service conducted a survey among more than 40 thousand people living in more than 20 cities. To the question "Do you buy Russian jamon?” 22.7 % of respondents said that there is no real jamon in Russia. 7 % continue to bring it from travel. The majority (70.3%) have never heard of the existence of Russian jamon.

As for the cost of Russian cheese, 42% of respondents consider it too high. The same number called the price acceptable, and 13% believe that the price is reasonably high.

Domestic cheese is preferred by 33%, and another 25% buy it because there is no alternative. At the same time, only 15% are satisfied with the quality of Russian cheese. 33% rate the product as “4”, 25% - "3", 12% gave the domestic cheese 2 points, and 15% - “1” (out of five).

Only 13% of the survey participants rate Russian analogues of the famous imported cheeses — Parmesan, Camembert, brie and mozzarella as “5”. 24% of respondents rated it as “3” and “4”. 19% rated them as “2”, and 20% - as "1".

With Russian wine, the situation is not so pessimistic. On average, 21.8% of users avoid Russian wine in Russia, while 22.5 % of domestic consumers prefer Russian wines.

Half of the respondents noted that Russian wine costs on average less than imported wine, while its quality was rated as “good” by 24 % of users, and 14 % gave all 5 points out of five.

85% of respondents who highly rated the quality of Russian wine (4 or 5 out of 5) consider its price fair and believe that it is more profitable to buy domestic products than imported ones. On average, 21.8% of users avoid Russian wine in Russia, while 22.5 % of domestic consumers prefer Russian wines.

Analysts at Rate & Goods explain the high ratings of wine by saying that if the production of European varieties of cheese and Spanish cured meat for domestic producers is a new thing, then the traditions of winemaking in Russia are quite strong. Coupled with the relatively high cost of European wines, Russian wine lovers often prefer more affordable domestic producers. And they have also been increasing their volumes in recent years.

“Looking ahead, we can assume that in the future, either the rapid growth of domestic farms that produce food products according to European standards will continue, or a partial compromise will be reached with regard to international sanctions", conclude the authors of the study.
