Russian coronavirus vaccine can be taken as a fermented dairy product
This drug is created by scientists of the Institute of experimental medicine (IEM, Saint Petersburg), he said. It is a type of mucosal vaccine that is injected into the body through the mouth, in the form of aerosols or slightly larger drops. As a rule, the antigens in such drugs are enclosed in microcapsules, which protects them from digestive enzymes.
"The target for cloning is a gene that encodes the S-protein of the coronavirus (spike protein, with which SARS-CoV-2 infects healthy cells – note of TASS). As a result, the gene is inserted into the coding area of the surface villi of the probiotic bacterium and a bacterium with an immunogenic virus protein is formed on the surface. This vaccine can be administered as a fermented dairy product. To date, pre-clinical trials of this vaccine are being conducted", said Chekhonin.
Currently, Russia is developing nine different vaccines that can potentially protect the human body from a new type of coronavirus. Six of them are developed by the state center for virology and biotechnology "Vector", two more – by the company "Biocad" (one of them – together with IEM). The ninth vaccine is created by the Saint Petersburg Scientific-Research Institute of vaccines and serums. Researchers plan to start testing some drugs in June.
