Second case of foot and mouth disease found in Zabaykalksy Krai
Five infected cows were found in Zabaykalsky Krai (Russia) near Chinese-Russian border last week. It’s the second case of foot and mouth disease in the region since the beginning of the year - the first one was detected in January, more than 1,000 of cows and 1,200 of pigs were slaughtered. Regional office of Rosselkhoznadzor plans to check the two areas where the disease was found, farmers whose cattle was forcedly killed will get compensations in accordance with market prices.
The virus was firstly detected in March 2013. It spread within three districts of the region. In December 2013 the quarantine period expired, but in January 2014 the virus was found again. Among possible reasons of the disease – animals’ stress induced by cold weather.
