Sergey Rezunenko: in many regions of the Caucasus, milk is considered as an intermediate product
According to the expert, the main problem that determines the state of animal husbandry is a kind of landscape, which cannot provide a sufficient feed base and creates additional difficulties for grazing livestock.
‘We understand that the productivity of a cow that grazes among rocks and walks around the mountains all day long cannot be high. Not to mention the fact that grass that she will eat is not high-quality, balanced food, it is not enough to get good milk from a cow. In addition, those farms that can provide a good feed base for animals have a reasonable question: why should we raise cows if we can have goats or sheep? And get even more at the same time, with less costs,’ the expert stressed.
At the same time, Sergey Rezunenko noted, this does not mean that cows are not valued in this region.
‘If you come there and even just walk through the markets, you will see that the local population highly appreciates beef. They love meat, they know it and they know how to work with it. Moreover, they consider cows precisely from the point of view of meat animal husbandry. And milk in this case acts as a kind of intermediate product, which can also be put into circulation, but its production has not been and, most likely, will never be a goal in this region,’ summed up the General Director.
