Swiss cheese producers to benefit from Russian food embargo
The Swiss company Intercheese which exports cheese abroad has got not less than 14 calls from Russian importers during the last days. Russian companies are searching for new suppliers after the government has banned import of food from EU and USA. Switzerland is a country “out of Russian sanctions” because it hasn’t joined EU, Canada, Australia and USA’s sanctions against Russia before.
According to Intercheese representative Daniel Daetwyler, Russian importers are mostly interested in mozzarella, gouda and edam. As per Switzerland customs data, in 2013 the country exported 431 tons of cheese to Russia, total volume of cheese export from Switzerland reached 63,000 tons.
“If the embargo remains, it's possible we'll export more cheese to Russia," said Jacques Bourgeois, director of the Swiss Farmer's Union, adding that gruyere is among the Swiss cheeses with most potential as exports have increased in recent years.
