The Asian market is becoming more and more attractive for exports of dairy products from Australia and New Zealand

Such data was presented by Susan Kilsby, an economist in the field of agriculture of ANZ Bank – the largest in New Zealand and the fourth largest in Australia. The expert will make a report at the VII Summer dairy summit within the XI Dairy Olympics, writes The DairyNews.

According to Susan Kilsby, over the past 18 years, milk production in Australia as a whole has declined and the Australian dairy market will not expand in the next decade. The volume of milk and the number of cows reached a peak in the early 2000s, but since 2001 milk production has decreased by 20%. At the same time, Australia's domestic demand for dairy products increased, which led to a further reduction in the surplus of dairy products supplied abroad. Every year Australia exports about 380 000 tons of dairy products. The main categories of dairy products for export are cheese and skim milk powder.

– New Zealand is the world's largest exporter of dairy products. The low population means a massive surplus of dairy products in the country, as only about 5% of the milk produced in New Zealand is consumed by the domestic market. New Zealand exports 2.5 million tons of dairy products annually. About half of the total exports of dairy products accounted for whole milk powder, followed by skim milk powder, cheese and butter, – commented the expert.

Ms. Kilsby noted that New Zealand's exports to Russia have declined over the past decade. Russia is still regarded as an important market, but the dynamics of supplies are strongly hampered by distance.

– The demand for dairy products in Asian markets, particularly in China, continues to grow, so now it is the sector that attracts the attention of New Zealand and Australian exporters, – concluded Susan Kilsby.
