The value of the FAO dairy product price index remained almost unchanged in September. A moderate increase in prices for butter, cheese and skimmed milk powder was offset by a drop in prices for whole milk powder, reported in the press service of the organization to The DairyNews.

As noted in the FAO, an increase in the value of the food price index was recorded in September, and vegetable oils and cereals rose most significantly.

The average value of the FAO food price index was 97.9 points, 2.1 per cent higher than in August and 5.0 per cent higher than in September last year.

Since August, the average value of the FAO grain price index has increased by 5.1 percent, surpassing the value for September 2019 by 13.6 percent.

Wheat prices rose most significantly due to increased trade volumes amid concerns about a possible decline in production in the southern hemisphere and dry weather conditions that negatively affect winter wheat crops in many European countries. International maize prices also increased due to the deterioration of crop prospects, especially in the European Union, and a downward revision of the volume of maize stocks moving from the previous season in the United States of America. International prices for sorghum and barley also increased, while international prices for rice declined.

The FAO food price index, published monthly, is used to track international prices for the most popular food products.

The average value of the FAO vegetable oil price index increased by 6.0 percent in September, reaching a record level for the past eight months, as prices for palm, sunflower and soybean oils rose against the backdrop of strong demand on world markets.

The September value of the FAO meat price index was 0.9 percent lower than a month ago, partly due to China's decision to ban imports from Germany due to the detection of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boars.

The value of the FAO sugar price index decreased by 2.6 percent, mainly due to the projected global sugar overproduction in the new season, due to a significant recovery in production in India, as well as the expected high level of production in Brazil.
