The General Prosecutor's Office has banned the sale of vegetable alternatives under the guise of milk in a number of online stores
‘The monitoring conducted by the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation on the Internet showed that the sale of plant-based products under the guise of dairy products is widespread, especially on websites for the delivery of food to consumers. At the same time, the current legislation provides that individual entrepreneurs and legal entities engaged in activities related to the circulation of food products and their retail trade are obliged to provide consumers with complete and reliable information about the quality and safety of food products, to apply reliable labeling on such products. It is not allowed to specify components in the product name if they or their processed products are not part of food products,’ says the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office.
During the organized inspections on the territory of Moscow, companies were identified that sell products through the Internet with information about their belonging to dairy products, without the actual content of milk in their composition, for example, "Almond milk", "Pecan Milk", "Banana soy milk", "Oat milk", etc.
‘According to the requirements of the prosecutors, heads of organizations excluded false information about the presence of dairy components in the products. Cases of selling products of vegetable origin under the guise of cheese, which contained only flavoring additives of known types of cheeses, were suppressed,’ the report says. The General Prosecutor's Office also notified Rospotrebnadzor about the violation.
Earlier, the Sbermarket food delivery service renamed all "milk of vegetable origin" in its application to "drinks of vegetable origin".
In May, Soyuzmoloko asked Starbucks to stop calling alternatives based on soy, rice and others as milk.
