The Motor Rally 'Way for Milk' Visited Riverdown Farm and Schouten Dairy Farms in Ontario, Canada
The owners of Riverdown farm John and Karen Velthuis did a tour for Russian and Canadian dairy farmers.
Number of milking cows is 110. Milk Yield - 40.4 kgs standard milk - March 2018 DHI. The milk has fat 4.22%, protein 3.43%. Other Solids 5.75%. The farm has Free Stall Robotic milking (Lely robots A4 robots)
The Riverdown farm owners told that Canadian producers are paid for their milk components (fat/protein/os), and pay deductions (transportation/advertising/etc.) on a volume basis. With average prices/kg for February payment of fat ($10.68), protein ($6.06), and os ($1.33), Riverdown Holsteins' gross milk revenue averaged approximately $.079/litre.
Who buys their milk? Dairy Farmers of Ontario, and it further distributes milk to various local processors.
Rolling herd average is 10,727 kgs - March 2018 DHI. Gross Milk value/cow is $8003- March 2018 DHI. Rolling breed class average 245 milk - 271 fat - 257 protein - March 2018 DHI.
In Eastern Ontario, the Schouten Farm near Richmond uses nine robots to do the routine work of milking nearly 350 Holsteins. This third-generation farm manages about 800 head of cattle, and employs three full time hands. In addition to the active milking herd, there are constantly approximately 60 dry cows, 30 calves under 30 days and replacements. Their daily quota is 490 kgs.
In Canada dairy farming operates under supply management system. The system includes egg production and poultry breeding; farmers work within the framework of demand forecast for their commodities over a certain time cycle, that also implies considering import deliveries and export dynamics of some products. The system is in progress since the 1970s.
