The Motor Rally 'Way for Milk' Visited the Longest-Run Cheese-Making Co-op in Canada
Its cheese products were nominated BEST CHEDDAR 2014 at the BRITISH EMPIRE CHEESE SHOW. All St. Albert cheddars are made from 100% pure milk, without any modified milk ingredients. Most popular cheeses: 1894 Fondue, Organic Swiss, Organic Mozzarella, Organic Mild Cheddar, Swiss, Smoked Cheddar, Camembert, Brie, Cheese curds, Slab. In the near future the co-op. offers the full range of cheeses you are used to, including: Brick, Colby, Monterey, Swiss, Cheddar light, and all flavored cheddars.
In the late 19th century East Ontario had numerous small creameries. Nowadays only St. Albert Cheese Co-op has stood the test of time in the province. There isn't much information about how the factory worked during its early years until in 1939 it was bought by a private person and in 1939 it was sold for $8500 with all its equipment and facilities to a co-op members. In 1950 a new creamery was launched. The facility had an impressive equipment design for that time.
In 2013 the co-op survived a devastating fire, nevertheless, it has managed to emerge from a severe crisis and increase capacity. Nowadays the factory employs fifth generation workers, and that is what the Motor Rally participants learned there.
