The Rosselkhoznadzor reported falsification of dairy products with the use of palm oil

Hundreds of thousands of tons of palm oil is used for the falsification of dairy products. This is confirmed by the growth of palm oil imports, which exceeded 800 thousand tons per year, said Deputy Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Nikolay Vlasov in the margines of the International dairy business forum of the EAEU in Sochi on Wednesday.

"The import of palm oil is growing progressively <...> It is clear that hundreds of thousands of tons of it is used for the falsification of dairy products. More than 800 thousand tons of palm oil comes to Russia annually", said Vlasov.

He said that part of the palm oil is used legally, for example, in confectionery. "The product becomes harmful when technical palm oil is used for falsification, which is not suitable for the food industry <...> there are such facts, but it is very difficult to prove them", he said.

Vlasov added that in dairy products there are new falsifications, including beef fat. "It is possible to add all these substances only at the processing plant, because the mixing technology is quite complex", he explained.

According to Vlasov, only stable growth of milk production can improve the situation in the industry. "The growth of the production of raw milk should be accompanied by a drop in its cost. Otherwise, milk fat will never have a price comparable to vegetable fat, and this temptation will remain for producers", he said. As it was noted at the forum, vegetable fats are five to six times cheaper than milk fat.

According to the Dairy Union of Russia, about half of the total milk production volume in the country - 14.8 million tons in 2017 - was provided by the top 15 regions, headed by the Republic of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Altai Krai and Krasnodar Krai, Rostov region. In January-July 2018, the volume of milk powder production in Russia fell by 6.6%, butter - by 4.1%, fermented dairy products - by 1.9%. According to the Ministry of industry and trade, the volume of falsification in the dairy market varies from 20% to 30%, and according to the Rosselkhoznadzor, in some categories of dairy products the share of falsification can reach 50%. In falsified dairy products milk fat is replaced by vegetable fat.
