The sector of peasant farm holdings has increased milk production 1,327 times for 26 years
According to the data of the Russian Dairy Research Center (RDRC), presented in the report on the dynamics of the Russian dairy market over the past 27 years, the share of peasant farm holdings in the structure of the livestock reached 27% by 2017.
The number of cows in agricultural organizations in 2017 amounted to 3315.3 thousand heads, which is 78.4% lower than in 1990 (1990 - 15322.1 thousand heads). In 1990, the share of the agricultural sector in the structure of livestock was 75%, 25% was the share of small private farms (5234.8 thousand heads), but by the mid-2000s the small private farms did not play a role in the structure of livestock and milk production in the country any longer, emphasize the analysts of the RDRC.
The growth of milk production in the sector of peasant farm holdings in 2017 compared to 1991 amounted to 1327 times, in 2017 the peasant farm holdings produced 2391.1 thousand tons of raw milk. In recent years, this sector is increasing milk production by at least 6% per year, in 2017 the growth was 9.5%.
In 2017 agricultural enterprises produced 15673.6 thousand tons of raw milk, by 63%less than in 1990. Agricultural enterprises show less dynamic growth compared to the peasant farm holdings, in the last 5 years the annual increase in milk production in this sector was about 2%. As we can see, the agricultural enterprises have not yet reached the level of milk production of 1990.

In the Russian Dairy Research Center it is emphasized that in 1990 the share of agricultural enterprises in the production of raw milk was 76%, the share of small private farms - 24%. Until 1994, the number of cows and milk production in the sector of small private farms (due to the destruction of collective and state farms and the transition of livestock to private farmers) was growing, in 1994 the share of small private farms in the production of milk in the country was about 38%, but in subsequent years milk production began to decline sharply and by the mid-2000s fell to the level of error.
The share of peasant farm hodings in the production of raw milk in Russia reached 13%by 2017, and will continue to grow. At the same time, official statistics indicate the volume of milk production in the small private farms in 2017 as 13118.8 thousand tons or 42% of all milk in the country, that is even more than in the 1990s. The number of cows at small private farms, according to Rosstat, amounted to 3670.8 thousand heads in 2017 or 45% of all livestock in Russia.
