Russia in the coming years will become a net exporter of food and will supply abroad more products than it purchases. This was stated by the Minister of agriculture Alexander Tkachev at a meeting in the government.
"We are confidently moving towards the goal of turning Russia into a net exporter of food, and in the coming years Russia can supply abroad more agricultural products than it purchases", — said Tkachev.
According to him, during the last 20 years, Russian imports of agricultural products dominated exports. "We see the dynamics of the last three years: imports is declining and exports is increasing," he said.
By the end of 2016, Russia exported agricultural products for $17 billion — 4% more than the year before. The export of sunflower oil increased by 28% by the results of the year and reached 1.8 million tons.
According to Tkachev, since the beginning of the season nearly 100 thousand tons of sugar has been exported— 10 times more than during the entire previous season 2015/2016. "We appreciate our export potential in the amount of more than 200 thousand tons of sugar", — reminded Tkachev.
In addition to the export of sugar, the export of products made with sugar is also growing. "Export of confectionery last year brought the country almost $1 billion," — said Tkachev. In 2016, Russia exported 420 thousand tons of confectionery products — 8% more than the year before.
