Tsaritsynsky and Lianozovsky dairy plants will become completely carbon-neutral
In June of this year, the Moscow Government signed a memorandum of cooperation with PepsiCo Russia to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
‘In 2019, Moscow became a participant in the OECD pilot project "Territorial approach to achieving the SDGs" and today is actively working on Environmental Goals, cooperating in this direction with representatives of the capital's enterprises. It is not the first year that Tsaritsynsky and Lianozovsky dairy plants have been implementing a large-scale environmental program that meets the global principles of sustainable development. Thus, over the past five years, two Moscow plants have managed to reduce electricity consumption by 10%, thereby saving about 120 million kWh, reduce water consumption by 18% and carbon dioxide emissions by 15%,’ said Vladimir Efimov.
The use of energy-and resource-saving technologies, the use of regenerative farming practices, changing packaging in favor of recyclable, compostable and biodegradable, as well as efforts to build a closed-cycle economy will allow the company to become carbon-neutral by 2040.
The PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy will become a fundamental principle for the development and change of all business processes - from responsible procurement of raw materials, more environmentally friendly production and sale of products to involving consumers and encouraging the choice of food products that are useful for people and safe for the planet.
Thus, the company continues to invest in the infrastructure for the collection and processing of packaging. In this regard, PepsiCo Russia actively cooperates with partners and suppliers, develops joint strategies to increase the conversion rate of various packaging materials. For example, its common task with Tetra Pak is to achieve a multiple increase in the level of recycling of combined cardboard packaging waste in a few years.
The company announced a 50% reduction in primary plastic for product packaging by 2030 (compared to 2020) and the use of 50% recycled plastic in the entire product range of the company.
‘Environmental initiatives of the capital's enterprises receive broad support from the city. Since 2016, the company Wimm-Bill-Dann has the status of an industrial complex in Moscow, which provides it with significant tax benefits, and therefore funds for the modernization of production facilities. In addition, as part of the implementation of a large-scale investment project, the company was granted a land plot in Vostochnoye Degunino district without bidding. There, the company is building industrial treatment facilities for Lianozovsky Dairy Plant,’ said Alexander Prokhorov, Head of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy.
By the end of this year, PepsiCo will completely switch to the purchase of energy from renewable sources — solar panels and hydroelectric power plants. This will allow the company to reduce greenhouse emissions from its own production by about 30%.
