Vladimir Putin has called for reform of the veterinary service in Russia

"Regarding the reform of the veterinary service. I fully agree with you that the situation requires major changes," said the President during a meeting with the authorized representatives on Tuesday in Moscow. One of them proposed to establish a single coordinating body represented by the Rosselkhoznadzor.

"What exists now in practice cannot meet the requirements of the day and causes damage to the development of agriculture and livestock breeding. We will definitely get engaged in this", - said Vladimir Putin.

Problems in the field of veterinary control in the country arose after the administrative reforms in early 2000-ies. Then a single "veterinary vertical" was destroyed and the veterinary services were taken out of control of the Rosselkhoznadzor and transferred to the regions. This largely contributed to the weakening of control of epizootic situation in the country and to the spread of dangerous animal diseases.
