Why Russia suspended Fonterra’s shipments?
On August 3 Fonterra informed the publicity about contamination of three batches of its whey protein concentrate with Clostridium botulinum bacteria. DairyNews correspondent connected Fonterra press-service which confirmed none of the contaminated products was exported to Russia, its clients’ products (which are probably contaminated) are not sold in Russia.
According to Nutricia Russia, Fonterra’s ingredients are not used while manufacturing products for the Russian market. So, Nutricia’s products are safe for consumers and the situation with Fonterra doesn’t influence Nutricia’s business in Russia. Nestlé also confirmed it didn’t buy Fonterra’s ingredients during the scandal, and its products are safe.
However Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service (Rospotrebnadzor) stopped Fonterra’s export to Russia immediately, the decision was taken even before the National Dairy Producers Union (SOUZMOLOKO) official address. It was useless to ask not to do what was already done, said Andrey Danilenko, Union’s head.
Ceasing Fonterra’s shipments to Russia being sure the contaminated products were not exported to Russia does not look reasonable, resembles political warfare, believe some market participants.
